Our CSCS accredited workforce and SSSTS accredited supervisors attended a full site induction, prior to the commencement of any works.
Risk assessments were carried out and specific hazards associated with the works were identified, including manual handling, use of step ladders, use of mobile tower scafflding, application of paint by brush/roller, surface preparation using hand tools and slips, trips and falls.
Papering the main lobby required our operatives to gain access via staircase scaffolding. This operation presented hazards such as fall of persons from height and falling materials. Preventative measures were put in place in order to control these risks, including:
- Ensuring all operatives were competent (PASMA trained)
- Ensuring the scaffolding was complete and fully scaff tagged
- Ensuring the scaffold was visually checked for any obvious defects
- Materials, tools and paint tins were kept away from the edge of the scaffold
- Ensuring kicker boards were in place around the edges of the work platforms
The programme was split into 7 different zones, with 12 to 15 rooms within each. As an example, zone 1 contained a manager's room, dining room, 6 bedrooms with en suites and corridors. Each zone, dependent on size and its complexity, was given an allotted amount of time to be completed. The supervisor monitored works on a day to day basis to check compliance with the specification.
Our operatives prepared and applied the following, zone by zone, as per the contract specification:
- 1 mist and 2 coats of Dulux vinyl matt to the ceilings
- 1 mist and 2 coats of Dulux diamond matt to the walls
- 2 coats of undercoat and 1 coat of eggshell to woodwork
- 3 coats of concrete floor paint applied at the staff area/rear of house
- Tektura wallpaper applied to specific areas
The working area had suitable signage displayed to warn of ongoing works for visitors and barriers were erected to prevent third party access.
The average number of workers on site was 4, but this did peak at 8 during the busiest periods of the contract.
