Jack Tighe Ltd were awarded the contract to provide surface preperation and apply protective coatings to all existing steel elements of the footbridge, with work commencing in January 2021

All Jack Tighe Ltd operatives received a site induction from Nationwide Engineering to ensure safe working practices and site PPE requirements are complied with.

Access to the working areas were managed by two forms of access.

Non-Possession Works.

Access to non-possession works was via fixed encapsulated scaffolding, supplied by Nationwide Engineering. Jack Tighe Ltd operatives did not alter or interfere with any sections of scaffolding, any alterations or damage to scaffolding were reported to Nationwide Engineering. Nationwide Engineering were responsible for ensuring the fixed scaffolding was erected to conform to SG4-15 & TG20-13 scaffold safety/design regulations.

Possession Works.

Possession works access was via mobile aluminium towers, JTL operatives erecting/dismantling the access towers shall held a certified PASMA qualification. Inspection of component parts, erection/dismantle, supervision and management of the mobile tower was under the control of a certified PASMA operative.

The Specification Procedure was as follows: –
Non-Possession Works – M24 Specification – XM92/M24-169
• Jet wash clean the substrate to remove oil, dirt, grease, and Chlorides
• Dry blast substrate to achieve ISO8501-1 2007 A1 Standard Sa2½
• Apply by spray Item 7.1.5 Jotamastic 90 to achieve a dry film thickness of 125µm (WFT 152µm)
• Apply by brush stripe coat to edges, bolts, nuts and hard to reach areas
• Apply by spray Item 7.1.7Jotamastic 90 colour to achieve a dry film thickness of 125µm (WFT 152µm)
• Apply by brush stripe coat to edges, bolts, nuts and hard to reach areas
• Apply by spray Item 7.3.1Hardtop XP to achieve a dry film thickness of 50µm (WFT 90µm)
• Topcoat Colour TBC

Possession Works – M34 Specification – XM92/M34-209
• Jet wash clean the substrate to remove oil, dirt, grease, and Chlorides
• Mechanically clean substrate to achieve ISO8501-1 2007 A1 Standard St3
• Apply by brush to prepared areas Jotamastic 90 to achieve a dry film thickness of 300µm (WFT 365µm)
• Apply by brush stripe coat to edges, bolts, nuts and hard to reach areas
• Multiple coats by brush/roller will be required to achieve a dry film thickness of 300µm
• Topcoat (Hardtop XP) has been removed due to not requiring UV protection, Jotamastic 90 is a primer & build coat that will give full protection to the steel substrate for the life span of the required specification.

Equipment utilised on site included a Compressor, Blast pots, Diesel bowsers, Spray pumps, Jet Washer – 7000PSI Pressure Washer, Clean air packs, Vacuum recovery system, Extraction equipment, Mobile aluminium tower, Decontamination unit, Generator and Lighting.
Due to the significant lead content present in the existing paint system on site and the potential risk to operatives during the removal of the paint system, the Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002 applied to this project.
All welfare was be provided by Nationwide Engineering Group.
Works were completed on time and to a value of £50,000.
